Hi! My name is Su Jane, and I am where I am now because of Fungates.
I first attended a FunGates school when I was 5. I was a small-sized, very shy little girl, who mostly stuck like glue to my parents’ side. Attending a FunGates school literally opened the fun-filled gates for me to learn how to be independent and communicate effectively. I learnt how to wash my own cup, wipe the table clean and take responsibility for spilling my food. I learnt to make friends, share, cooperate and take care of others through fun activities, art and craft, games, mini concerts and that Zoo Negara field trip. I still keep in contact with some of those friends today!
Moreover, FunGates equipped me with a strong foundation in English. I learnt to read and pronounce words using the phonics system, something I still utilise till this day. By the age of 5 and a half, I could read the newspaper with minimal trouble.
Looking back, it was the conducive environment FunGates provided that made learning so effective. Teaching apparatus and equipment were colourful and attractive. Teachers were always so pumped with energy, encouraging and loving. Every class, whether it was Mathematics, Chinese or Bahasa Malaysia, it captivated me. FunGates ignited my curiosity to learn and ask questions, which eventually helped me to think critically while studying. I was taught in an environment where everyone is filled with joy, and I enjoyed every moment of it. I remember even wanting to go to school on Saturday!
FunGates did not merely help me in my academic studies, but even set the foundation of my value system. I am most grateful that FunGates promoted creativity, but did not compromise on character building. My teachers taught me how to love and moulded me to be a well-mannered, honest and responsible person with integrity. They showed me what was right from wrong. And when they disciplined me, they did it out of love, and made sure I understood.
With the firm foundation Fungates built in me, it was rather natural for me to excel academically and score in all major exams with straight As (i.e. 7 As for UPSR, 8 As for PMR and 10 As for SPM). At the same time, I was equally involved in extra-curricular activities i.e. an active member of the school’s marching squad representing the school for many national level competitions and a dedicated librarian.
Today, I am 19. I have just completed my Cambridge A-Levels in Methodist College Kuala Lumpur (MCKL) with 2A+s and 1A and have been selected for admission to University of York, UK to pursue BSc in Biology. Ranked as one of the top 100 universities in the world, University of York has also been ranked 2nd in the League Table for Biosciences (according to The Guardian University Guide 2014). I am also a humble recipient of the MCKL Special Teaching Scholarship, which means I am now given a chance to pursue my dreams of becoming a passionate lecturer!
To my lovely teachers and FunGates, thank you so much for being that stepping stone that brought me this far. You have every reason to be proud of the difference you have made in my life and the lives of your students! All those beautiful memories made and lessons learnt, I will treasure always.
